The Centre of Engineering & Manufacturing Excellence is primarily an education centre for Ford’s junior workforce. Constructed over three phases, the centre comprises mechanical workshops, teacher training rooms, restaurants, a crèche, a hotel and a library, plus auditorium pods that break through the front facade.

The site is selectively treated to specialist lighting. Large glazing to the internal street allows the back wall to be used as a canvas for the entire length of Phase 1 & 2. Lighting the restaurant rotunda is warm CDM-TC that enhances the natural qualities of the wooden cladding.

Along the south façade, CFL uplighters graze the legs of the ‘I’ support sections and softly light the ambre-solaire. Throughout the landscape, low level lighting depicts planters and seating areas, whilst pockets of light create areas of interest and focus. Transition from outside to the space within is eased by custom suspended twin gullwing reflectors replicating the exterior scheme.   400w blue HIT uplighters graze the ceiling line and generate the perception of space and scale. Emergency lighting levels are provided by miniature low voltage floods that are further enhanced from beneath the cantilevered walkway. The downlighting component of the uplighters allows these emergency levels to be achieved whilst providing wash to the treads.

The application of bespoke T5 luminaires to the underside of the walkway provides both direct and indirect lighting. When viewed from the car park, this specialist lighting forms the backdrop to the building.   A seamlessly colour changing chimney is a contemporary addition to the project. The nine metre chimney stacks are clad in perforated stainless steel to glow as desired. Mocking-up the scheme allowed LAPD to pre-programme hue, intensity and randomising speed prior to system installation.
