With seven floors of accommodation based around a central courtyard, the main function of Portcullis House is office space for 450 MP’s and their staff. In addition, the building provides facilities for the Select Committee, and for conference and meeting purposes.

The lighting design for each office incorporates compact fluorescents, housed discretely in custom built architectural units and above built in furniture.   All office lighting is dimmable. The prototype fittings house 2 x 36 W PLL dimmable lamps in the lower trough, with 3 x 70W metal halide lamps in the upper trough. This specialist lighting configuration provides a dimmable high frequency source which eliminates flicker during TV filming.

Throughout the building, Z type fittings enable the use of many configurations of lamps, suspensions and even IP ratings. The three components of the fitting are the frame, the wing and the gearbox. The bespoke frame is finished by bead blasting and electro-polishing in 316 stainless steel.

Designed to allow the optimum proportion of light to glow through, the wing was constructed using Silica Acrylic with screen finish. This luminaire requires a total of over 52m of cable and penetrates the ceiling to plug into the gearbox, housed within the suspended floor above.
