The visitors’ centre is part of a major reworking of the Whitby Abbey site. On the north façade, previously in-filled windows are fitted with a single sheet of glass. The new structure extends over the partly demolished south elevation. This provides a framework from which an enclosing curtain of glass and cedar is hung.

A mixture of spot and flood reflectors is used, together with adjustable recessed downlights that are focused on to areas of interest. These are mounted close to the wall surface to accentuate the texture of the stone.
